Our youth group is made up of an extraordinary, dedicated and caring group of 7th–12th grade students who strive to make the world a better place in which to live much as Jesus did. They accomplish this by putting into practice the second point of the First Lutheran Mission Statement (Serve Joyfully) and Vision Statement (“…offer ourselves in joyful service to God and to the world which God loves – reaching out in love as a cheerful response to God’s grace.”) through involvement in community service projects locally, domestically, and internationally.
Some of the past service projects include:
- Cooking dinner for the homeless at First United Methodist Church;
- Preparing food boxes for the needy at The Northeast Community Fund;
- Helping with the US Postal Service food drive;
- Picking up trash at a local park; and
- Raking leaves at First Lutheran.
Other activities have included:
- 2008 Mission trip to San Leon, Texas (near Galveston) to help in the clean-up after Hurricane Ike.
- 2007 Mission trip to Biloxi, Mississippi to help rebuild homes there after Hurricane Katrina.
- World Vision’s 30-Hour Famine where the youth collect donations and go 30 hours without food with only juice and water to better understand the suffering of many children in under-developed countries;
- LOMC (Lutheran Outdoor Ministry Center – www.LOMC.org) camp where the youth go for the weekend for Bible study, hiking, campfires, and team-building challenges and games.
